The Pharos Trust presents a song recital with Greek mezzo soprano Angelica Cathariou and French pianist Emmanuel Olivier, on Monday 26 February 2007 at the PASYDY Auditorium in Nicosia. The evening’s programme comprises works by Ravel, Offenbach, Μikroutsikos, Massenet, Poulenc, Satie, Weill, Βizet and the world premiere of a new work by Cypriot composer Evis Sammoutis, especially commissioned by the Pharos Trust. The artists will also give a student concert in Nicosia as part of the Trust’s Music Education Programme, developed in association with the Ministry of Education and Culture and supported by the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority.


Angelica Cathariou
– mezzo soprano 

Mezzo soprano Angelica Cathariou, born in Athens, studied piano and singing at the Athenaeum-Maria Callas Conservatory of Athens, and furthered her studies in Italy (Renata Scotto Opera Academy and State Conservatory of Novara) on a scholarship from the A.S. Onassis Foundation. Ms Cathariou holds a Master of Arts degree in Music (Contemporary Studies, University of York).

Since her debut in 1997 as Mrs Quickly in Verdi’s Falstaff with Rolando Panerai in the title role at the Teatro Ponchielli in Cremona, she has sang major operatic roles – ranging from Euridice and Tragedia in J. Peri’s LEuridice and La mère in Martinu’s Les larmes du couteau to the title role in Bizet’s Carmen, Mrs Peachum in Britten’s Beggar’s Opera and Dinah in Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti – at venues including New York’s Carnegie Hall, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Opéra National du Rhin, Teatro Comunale di Ferrara, Greek National Opera, Freiburg’s Konzerthaus, Fondation Royaumont, Megaron Athens Concert Hall, York National Centre of Early Music, Budapest Spring Festival, Hellenic Festival (Odeon Herodes Atticus), Festival de Marseille, Festival International de la Roque d’Anthéron.

As a soloist Ms Cathariou has performed under the musical direction of Claudio Abbado, Theodore Antoniou, Daniele Agiman, Steuart Bedford, Roland Hayrabedian, Jan Latham Koenig, Alexandre Myrat, Jerôme Pillement, Tiziano Severini, Roberto Tolomelli, Jean-Jacques Werner, Alberto Zedda, with ensembles such as the Athens State Orchestra, La Camerata, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Manhattan Philharmonic, I Pomeriggi Musicali, Orchestre Philarmonique de Strasbourg and Orchestre de Picardie. Angelica Cathariou also performs extensively as soloist in numerous concerts of contemporary music. In 1998 she was awarded the Premio Leoncavallo Prize in Locarno, Switzerland.

Emmanuel Olivier – piano

Emmanuel Olivier studied music at Lille’s C.N.R., the Conservatoire Royal in Brussels and subsequently at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique in Paris where he received the Diplômes de Formation Supérieure in piano, song accompaniment and direction. His special interest in the Lied and French mélodie repertoires led him to studies with Gérard Souzay and Jeff Cohen (at CNSM, Paris), Ruben Lifschitz and Martin Isepp (Royaumont) and Walter Moore at the Universität für Musik (Vienna).

Winner in numerous international competitions in the performance of piano and chamber music, Emmanuel Olivier appears regularly in various countries in Europe and Asia. As chef de chant, he has worked with numerous operatic theatres and orchestras such as with the Théâtre du Châtelet, Cité de la Musique, Lille Opera, Tourcoing Atelier Lyrique, Compiègne Théâtre Impérial, ARCAL, Dresden Philharmonie, Orchestre de Picardie and Wildbad Festival. He is currently assistant professor in song accompaniment at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique (CNSM) in Paris.
