'The Spirit of Europe from Medieval to
Contemporary'

This year's Pharos Chamber Music Festival, dedicated to the Spirit of Europe from the medieval to the contemporary, will be our most ambitious to date, bringing dozens of world-renowned musicians from all over Europe to Cyprus for a month of intensive music making. Spanning the month of May, this series of fourteen concerts will be presented as part of events celebrating the accession of Cyprus to the European Union. The Festival's wide-ranging programmes offer audiences rare opportunities to hear European music through the ages performed by distinguished chamber ensembles of all conceivable combinations of instruments.
Nicosia performances will be held at the PASYDY Auditorium Paphos performances will be held at the Royal Manor House in Kouklia All performances begin at 8:30 p.m.

RTE Vanbrugh Quartet
(Ireland) Supported by the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism for Ireland's 2004 Presidency of the European Union. The Festival opens with the RTE Vanbrugh Quartet, the quartet-in-residence of the Irish national broadcasting association. This concert will coincide with the Irish EU Presidency and Cyprus' accession to the European Union and will be presented in association with the Irish Embassy. Programme to include works by Haydn, Barry and Beethoven. |

Eskar Piano Trio
(Denmark) The Festival continues with an evening in the company of the Eskar Piano Trio. Formed in 1994 the Trio has since distinguished itself as one of the leading ensembles on the Danish chamber music stage. Programme to include works by Haydn, Barry and Beethoven. |

The London
Sinfonietta (Britain) Supported by PriceWaterhouseCoopers and The European Parliament One of the world's leading contemporary music ensembles, The London Sinfonietta will give a 'State of the Union' concert, which will showcase young contemporary composers from all over Europe. A new piece by Cypriot composer Yannis Kyriakides will be specially commissioned for this occasion. |

Akademie fur Alte
Musik Berlin(Germany) with soprano Deborah York In collaboration with the German Embassy and the Goethe-Zentrum Nicosia Regarded as one of the leading ensembles of its kind, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin has toured all over Europe, the Middle East and Japan. They will bring us back to the Baroque with cantatas by Scarlatti and Bach and instrumental music by Vivaldi and Telemann. |

The Sixteen
(Britain) Nicosia with conductor Harry Christophers
Stepping back further in time we will rediscover the Cyprus Codex. This music was written in Cyprus during the reign of the last Lusignan King, which he gave to his daughter on her wedding day. She took the manuscript to Europe and it was lost until recently. The celebrated British vocal group The Sixteen will sing a selection of gems from this collection along with renaissance music from Spain and Portugal. |

Belcanto Strings
(Pan-European)
Belcanto Strings, have performed at major concert halls throughout Europe. Besides regular radio broadcasts, the Trio, led by Wolfgang Schroeder, is a frequent guest at numerous renowned international music festivals. For these recitals, the Trio is joined by an international selection of distinguished chamber musicians. Programmes to include works by Mozart, Dvorak, Prokofiev, Brahms, Arensky and Klein. |

Danel Quartet
(France)
The final concerts of the Festival will be given by the Danel Quartet, which is currently acknowledged as one of the finest string quartets in Europe. Their programme will comprise three masterpieces of the quartet literature: Beethoven's opus 18 no 2, Schubert's magnificent 'Death and the Maiden' Quartet and the String Quartet by the early twentieth century French composer Maurice Ravel. |
