The Pharos Trust continues the Cyprus Artists Series with a Percussion, Cello and Flute recital.  The recital is taking place on Wednesday 28 November 2007 at Casteliotissa Hall, Paphos Gate, Nicosia at 8:30pm, with Nicolas Papageorgiou (percussion), Aude Marie Auphan (cello) and Virgine Bove (flute).

 

The Pharos Trust’s Cyprus Artists Series is presented concurrently with its internationally established annual Concert and Recital Series. The series, is dedicated to the promotion and support of leading musicians of Cypriot ancestry, as well as musicians residing and pursuing a career in Cyprus. In keeping with its mission to promote artistic excellence and cultural dialogue, the Trust aspires to offer Cyprus audiences the opportunity to experience fine performances, while developing an active network of Cypriot musicians. The Series will also be committed to the promotion of Cypriot composers and will feature premieres of commissioned new works.

 

 

Nicolas Papageorgiou studied percussion at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London (1993-97), followed by postgraduate studies at the Amsterdam Conservatoire (Sweelinck Conservatorium) (1997-98). He is, since 1999 Principal Timpanist of the Cyprus State Orchestra. He has performed in Cyprus, Greece, England, Holland, Germany, Poland and France, where he also recorded, as vibraphone soloist with the Capella of the Kremlin of Moscow, R. Gousseau’s “Vepres de Millenaire”. In Cyprus he regularly appears as recitalist and chamber musician, and has recently formed the Cyprus Contemporary Music Ensemble, which gave its first performance in April 2002. He has also performed, as a soloist with the Cyprus State orchestra, the first ever performance of a percussion concerto in Cyprus. He has on several occasions collaborated with the National Theatre of Cyprus, including the Athens Festival at ancient Epidaurus, and with the experimental Dance/Theatre Group Echo Arts, most recently for the Cyprus European Dance Festival 2002 and the Cairo Experimental Theatre Festival. Other recent appearances include a performance of Iannis Xenakis’ Rebonds in a tribute concert to the music of the composer, organized by the Greek Embassy in Cyprus and the Cyprus Composers Centre, and an appearance as one of the three soloists in a concert featuring the music of the composer Christos Pittas at the Athens concert hall.

 

Born in France, Aude-Marie Auphan studied cello at the conservatoires of Lille and Saint Maur des Fosses (Paris). Further Studies took her to London where she graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1999. She has performed as a soloist and chamber player in France, England, Sweden, Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, Egypt, Greece and Cyprus. From 1997 to 1999, in parallel to her studies in England she worked regularly with the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse.

 

She arrived in Cyprus in 1999 following her appointment as Principal Cellist of the Cyprus State Orchestra. In Cyprus, in addition to her orchestral work, Aude-Marie Auphan also appears regularly as a chamber musician, and considers collaboration with living composers, a priority. She has premiered Savvas Savva’s cello concerto Pictures, works regularly with composer Christos Pittas (Antigone, Foinisses, and Osper Onar, for 4 cellos) and many others such as Sophia Serghi, Lior Navok etc. Aude-Marie Auphan has established ongoing collaborations with artists from other fields. She has collaborated on several occasions with the Dance Theatre of Arianna Economou and the Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOC), and lately with choreographer Alexandra Waierstall.  Ms Auphan is a professor of Cello at the Ethnikon Odeion Cyprus, as well as for the scholarship programme of the Cyprus State Youth Orchestra. She regularly coaches chamber music in the CSYO summer course, and is invited for seminars at the ARTE music academy (Nicosia).


Virgine Bove started playing flute at an early age and went on to study piccolo at the National Conservatorie of Paris.
She has toured Italy, United-States and Belgium with the Sorbonne Orchestra and has participated in several recordings including Stanley Clark’s film music for ‘The Transporter’.
Recently arrived on the island of Cyprus, she is Sub-Principal Flute in the Cyprus State Orchestra and has already started teaching and performing with other groups.
