“Great Britain's most outstanding solo viola player” The Times
Philip Dukes’ recital debut at London's South Bank in 1991, described by The
Strad magazine as "world class", marked the beginning of a career that is
now established as one of the foremost of his generation. Dukes has won a
succession of awards, scholarships, prizes and competitions, such as the
coveted European Rising Stars Award. He has given several world-premiere
performances, such as Sally Beamish's Viola Concerto, Hugh Watkins' Concerto
for Viola and Cello and Orchestra, and the previously unpublished Concerto
for violin, viola and orchestra by Benjamin Britten. Dukes has recorded a
number of CDs with most notable example his recording, ‘The Film Music of
Sir Richard Rodney Bennett’ with the BBC Philharmonic, which was awarded the
German Record Prize (Deutsche Schallplattenpreis). In recognition of his
success as an international viola soloist, Dukes was unanimously elected a
Fellow of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and made an Honorary
Associate of the Royal Academy of Music.
