| Message by H.E. the President of the
Republic of Cyprus Mr. Glajkos Clerides
It is with great pleasure that I welcome the National Chamber Orchestra of Armenia to Cyprus for its first visit to our island. Our countries have historic and cultural links that stretch back over two millennia, and it is particularly gratifying that as Armenia marks the tenth year of its renewed independence, these links are again being strengthened. Cyprus and Armenia are small, vulnerable countries in areas of conflict and competing powers. Both have experienced aggression in recent years. The peace and stability we all yearn for in our region may be achieved through goodwill and a determination to adhere to the common humanity that binds us all. Cultural exchange, and in particular the language of inspired music, are powerful vehicles to develop the spiritual essence of man. The Pharos Trust has been' actlve in that effort over the past few years and its mission is appreciated. This year Armenia also celebrates the 1700th Anniversary of the acceptance of Christianity in 301 AD. It was the first Nation State to accept the Light of the teaching and has maintained its commitment to that Light through the ~ centuries against great odds and adversity. This tour is part of worldwide celebrations marking that achievement. We salute the Armenian Nation and wish the National Chamber Orchestra of Armenia a rewarding stay in Cyprus. |
