Stream of Fire

New Art from Armenia

Stream of Fire: New Art from Armenia is a 132-page beautifully illustrated exhibition catalogue with more than eighty colour reproductions of the works of leading post-Soviet Armenian artists. The catalogue, published in 1995 accompanied the Pharos Trust’s inaugural event – an art exhibition which took place within the context of European Cultural Month Nicosia, Cyprus (Sept 15 – Oct 15). One of the first books on contemporary art from Armenia, the catalogue highlights the country’s new and exciting artistic talent as it makes its transition from Soviet rule. It includes works by prominent Armenian artists such as Sarkis Hamalbashian, Ashod Bayandour and Marcos Grigorian, who returned to Armenia from the U.S.A and whose work is exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Rockefeller Collection. The accompanying text includes a critical essay by the editor and President of the Pharos Trust, Garo Keheyan, an overview of twentieth-century art in Armenia, by Nouritza Matossian (author of a biography on Arshile Gorky) entitled ‘Into the Sun - Armenian Art as Survival’, and a profile of each artist by award-winning British author, Philip Marsden.

This attractive catalogue, designed by Herman Lelie - a leading art book designer and printed by Mariogros Italy - would make an invaluable addition to any art collection, private library, university or reference library. The book is available from the Soloneion and Moufflon bookstores, Nicosia (£CY20). Alternatively it can be ordered directly from Pharos Publishers – 24 Demosthenes Severis Avenue 1080 Nicosia, P.O.
